for one messaging number
Every message that leaves or arrives at your number counts — not only the ones you send.
This is the part worth reading twice, because most people assume only outgoing messages are counted. On PurrMSG they are counted both ways.
Y confirmation, a menu choice, HELP, and STOP.Counting arrivals is what lets members reply at all. A service that charged only for what you send would have to stop members answering, and the reply is the point.
A text message has a size limit set by the phone network, not by us. A message longer than the limit is carried as two, and we are charged for two — so it counts as two.
160 characters counts as one message. An emoji or a curly apostrophe drops that limit to 70.
Three rules of thumb cover almost everything:
You never have to count this yourself. The web compose box tells you what a message will count as while you are typing it, before anyone receives it — and if a member's name makes their copy longer than everyone else's, it names who.
Use emoji if they sound like you. Just know that one costs more than twice as much to send, and a plain-text announcement is the cheapest thing you can write.
Both examples assume roughly twenty announcements in the month, which is inside the 15 to 30 messages a month a typical member receives.
Twenty announcements to 34 members is about 680 messages, plus replies. That is inside the first thousand, so the month costs $27.
Twenty announcements to 300 members is about 6,000 messages. That is the 1,000 included plus 17 blocks of 300, so the month costs $197.
A quiet month costs less. Lists that send more often, or that carry more members, cost more — the price follows the messages rather than the size of the list, because that is what the service is actually doing.
Tell us about your group and we will set up your number and your first list, then send you the list code to advertise. Members join by texting that code.
